Toru side table is made from re-used Rimu. What was once a floor joist and a floor board from a local villa, has been crafted into a beautiful furniture piece.
Rimu has historically been used in New Zealand furniture for years, it is extremely hard and has a distinctive decorative grain.
Inspired by New Zealand's landscape, Maori shapes and motifs; the design is round in shape (porotaka) with the table top elevated on three (toru) angle cut legs. A round central disk secures all parts together (paihere), symbolising the idea of unity.
The table is finished in a natural black ink (māmangu) and raw flaxseed oil. This flaxseed oil is a 100% natural, grown and cold-pressed in Canterbury. The oil penetrates deep into the wood grain, to bring out Rimu's distinctive grain and protects the piece from drying out. The colour black symbolises strength and Aotearoa's national identity.
A natural oiled finished version is also available.
